Chinese New Year
For a variety of reasons, many people eagerly await the end of January and what seems to be the longest month of the year. The days are becoming a little lighter, spring is slowly approaching, and most of us are finally getting paid after the Christmas break.
Millions of people worldwide celebrate Chinese New Year on January 29, 2025, which is marked by the conclusion of January. On the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar, the event, which is also called the Spring Festival or Lunar New Year, signifies the start of a new year.
Animals play a major role in the festivities, which are also well-known for their parades and elaborate decorations. The 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac is represented by twelve creatures, each of which is associated with specific traits and elements.
These rotate each year on a cycle and are the: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. 2025 marks the year of the Snake.
Snakes are seen as both cunning, evil, menace, and horror in Chinese culture, as well as emblems of harvest, fecundity, spirituality, and good fortune.
Snakes are also associated with fertility, longevity, and prosperity. They are also revered for their ability to renew and shed their skin, which symbolises transformation and rebirth.
In Chinese cosmology, each year is also associated with one of the five basic elements; namely metal, wood, water, fire, and earth, which create a 60-year cycle. Therefore, 2025 is also known as the Year of the Wood Snake.
The Wood Snake is charming, intelligent, and creative but also secretive, cunning, and sometimes ruthless. The last Wood Snake year was 1965.
The Year of the Snake in 2025 is all about intuition, wisdom, and transformation.
Snakes have a reputation for being serene and introspective, and this year will be no exception. Motivating us to reflect and make careful plans. Like a snake shedding its skin, it's a time to let go of old patterns or habits to make place for development and rejuvenation.
