The metal element & autumn
We are now entering the season of Autumn and in acupuncture, this corresponds with the Metal element.
Each of the Five Elements corresponds to a season, and the goal of acupuncture treatment is to maintain the elements' cycle.
As in nature, this is the time to let go and turn inward. Letting go can be scary, but when we let go of what we no longer need, it means that we can also make way for the new. If we can’t let go of the past; or of what no longer serves us; we cannot continue to grow and thrive.
Metal Attributes
‘Letting go’, ‘reflection’, ‘clarity’, and ‘grief’ are attributes of the Metal Element and Autumn.
The real gift of grief and the metal element is the realisation of our genuine selves and the things that are most valuable in our life. A crucial period for transition, autumn can be difficult depending on how you handle the knowledge that winter is approaching.
The essence of the Metal element and grief lies in unveiling our true selves and recognising the invaluable aspects of our lives.
Letting Go
Although the metal element is linked to loss, it also represents connection—to oneself, to others, and to the outer world. Every year is a cycle of seasons; time is not linear; we are always growing and realising that nothing is constant.
We always have fresh chances to plant seeds, make plans, harvest and reap, and get rid of things we don't need.
Reflection
The Element of Metal and autumn are wonderful times to think back on the year, what you have accomplished, what has gone well, and what hasn't. It is the time to strengthen your immune system and get ready for winter.
Clarity
Enjoy the moment while it lasts because the metal element offers you the clarity to view life's positive aspects. with accuracy and meticulous attention to detail.
Grief
Some people experience grief just as profoundly as they do the letting go of late summer energies. In the fall, plants die back, leaves fall from trees, and the earth absorbs their energy again. It is obvious why some countries refer to autumn as ‘the fall’.
Related Organs
Autumn and the Metal Element are associated with the lungs and colon.
These bodily organs function together: removing waste and unwanted toxins from our bodies, minds, and spirits. It helps us breathe in pure air, which is essential for life.
If the body is out of equilibrium during this time of year, illnesses including bronchitis, shortness of breath, asthma, coughs, allergies, nasal congestion, emphysema, colds, sore throats, constipation, diarrhoea, IBD, IBS, and abdominal discomfort can affect the lungs and colon.
When your mind and spirit are incapable of absorbing purity, waste continues to accumulate within your body. There may be feelings of depression, negativity, loneliness, and stubbornness (the inability to "let go") in place of inspiration and serenity.
Disruptions in the balance of these organs during this season may manifest as respiratory issues, digestive ailments, and emotional imbalances.
Failure to maintain equilibrium during this time can lead to physical discomfort and mental unrest, hindering the intake of purity, and causing a buildup of toxins. This prevents us experiencing tranquility and inspiration. In fact, one may succumb to feelings of depression, stubbornness, isolation, and negativity.
